This activity will end right where it started.
In the morning, meet your air‐conditioned coach in the French Quarter and settle in for the approximately 30‐minute ride to the town of Jean Lafitte, a historic fishing village named for a notorious 19th‐century pirate and privateer. Located deep in the wetlands at the edge of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park, this town offers an authentic look at Cajun culture and local enterprise, including logging, plantation agriculture and a rich – and often grisly – tradition of animal trapping.

Before heading out on the water, pop into the albino alligator exhibit and grab a delectable shrimp Poboy to go (own expense).  Enjoy the proximity to the water surface and warm breeze as you zip through the bayou.  Spot lurking alligators, snakes, raccoons and giant river rodents called nutria. Savor the moments of calm when the boat slows and your native captain shares stories and facts about the area’s history and the surrounding wildlife – and maybe even interacts with an animal or two!

Your bayou adventure ends with a return to the French Quarter by coach, arriving in mid‐afternoon.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Airboat Adventures
Travel by air-conditioned coach from central New Orleans to the nearby fishing village of Jean Lafitte, named after an 18th-century smuggler. Home to a variety of diverse cultures, this area surrounded by Lousiana bayous has been the site of extensive logging operations, sugar and rice plantations and animal trapping enterprises over the years. Today, the people's simple way of life is a marked contrast to the hustle-bustle of New Orleans. In Jean Lafitte, you can get some snacks (own expense) and check out an albino alligator exhibit before boarding your airboat, a vessel that relies on an aircraft-type propeller mounted on its back to move it forward. Feel the wind in your hair as your move swiftly over the wetlands. Your native boat captain will talk about the history and culture of the area and point out wildlife as you travel. See lots of alligators lurking in the marshes, as well as local birds, raccoons and nutria -- giant river rodents that call the bayous home. Conclude your 4-hour family-friendly escape to the Louisiana wetlands with coach transport back to central New Orleans.

Fantastic experience! Took the large airboat swamp tour. Saw many, many gators “up close & personal “! Tour guide brought gators right up to the boat ! Gorgeous scenery with abundant wildlife spottings including a pair of owls. Great narration including the history of the bayou, politics and lore. Tour boat operator was extremely entertaining. Would definitely recommend this adventure.

The weather caused a lot of delays and it took forever to get on the boat. Our tour guide was great but they shortened our trip due to weather. The albino alligator isn’t an exhibit but just one small albino alligator in a small pond.

Appalled
Alison_P

I'm appalled that feeding marshmallows and hot dogs to wild animals is deemed hilarious and acceptable by this tour company. Turning wild animals into entertainment is simply not acceptable.

Great fun! Tour guide was a hoot. Would have liked if the gift shop was better supplied. Make sure to take sunscreen!!

We will certainly share that with the gift shop operators. It is peak heat season in Louisiqana.

Fun Activity!
Janet_W
, Jun 2022
Not as good as the one I went on last year with a different company. To begin with, although advertised as being a 1 hour 45 minute boat ride, it was only 1 hour and 21 minutes. Our captain provided very little information about the animals and ecology of this special area and seemed to be in a hurry to get back to the dock. Any mention in the advertisement about visiting the fishing village is sort of misleading. We did not explore the village etc. Also, eat breakfast before you go because there is no food (other than chips and soda) to purchase, as advertised. I would definitely do this activity, but not with this company.
icon Response from Host , Jun 2022
We don't advertise a fishing village at all but maybe the guide mentioned the ones you might see. Most of the Captains are native to the area and share a lot of stories and native knowledge. We apologize if this one fell short.

Airboat broke down and we were stuck in noon sun
David_N
, May 2022
Airboat broke down in swamp, most of time on the swamp was spent broken down. Customer service reports this was a full tour. I would not recommend going, I was sweating bullets as I had a flight to catch after and wasn't sure how quickly we'd be rescued, the sun was out etc. I would only choose this company if the others are all booked up and you are okay with seeing 2 gators. Bring sun screen.

Please alert us to the date and the reservation name on this excursion. Although the airboat should have assisted you we would like to if possible. Send it to Guestexperiences@glnosc.com

Broken boat - slighted on tour
Lance_B
, May 2022
Our boat broke down and we spent over an hour of the hour and a half tour we were supposed to have just sitting on the boat waiting for someone to come fix. When getting back off the bus we went to the ticket office and asked for some compensation as we never actually got the tour we paid for. We were told no . Boat breaking down is a risk you take. Considering the price we paid and how much we were looking forward to this tour it felt like we wasted a whole afternoon . We were not even offered a water when getting back to the marina area and were told we could not go back up to the bar to purchase one. Given the bad service all around I would not recommend this tour company to anyone and will share my reviews on google.
icon Response from Host , Jun 2022
Please let us assist you. The Airboat operator should have reached out. Will you send the date of service and the name on the reservation to guestexperiences@glnosc.com

Marshmallows are gator crack!
Lara_A
, May 2022
Enjoyed the boat ride through the beautiful area. Who knew that you could train wild alligators to come to the boat with marshmallows?! Our bus driver to and from the boat ride was really good. He kept up an enjoyable patter about sites we were passing, local culture and restaurant recommendations.
