The Basics

Sitting between the Richmond and Sunset districts, Golden Gate Park stretches about 50 blocks across San Francisco. Stop by the de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences at the Music Concourse, or pay a visit to the Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Tea Garden, San Francisco Botanical Garden, Shakespeare Garden, National AIDS Memorial Grove, and Stow Lake.

Farther west, the park spreads out with more trails, a 9-hole golf course, meadows that host annual music festivals, windmills, and even a bison paddock. Park Segway tours and bike rentals are the top ways to explore.

Best way to see Golden Gate Park
First time on segways and we loved it! The trail was fun…especially the ‘off road’ portions. Such a great way to cover a lot of ground and see so much of the sights. Zack was a very cool guide…knowledgeable and passionate about the park. Highly recommend this tour!

The staff was amazing and patient. I took my 12 year old who was extremely shy and timid but they were wonderful with her.

Great tour guide, we enjoyed the experience. My 8-year old son had a great time too. Not too difficult to ride through the area

Golden Gate Park Segway Tour - Easy to learn then 2.5 hours of gliding fun
I lived in the Bay Area for 15 years but on a surprise day off where I wasn’t sure what to do, I was glad I thought of a Segway tour and one through the gorgeous and glorious golden gate park. The park is vast and full of many different type of landscapes. Going through the park on a Segway also gave it some additional fun and excitement. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour to anyone, and Hopefully I can do it again someday. Also, the staff was very friendly and helpful. 5 stars

Okay definitely worth the cost!! and the electric bike vs. regular. i’m pretty athletic and biking up those hills and to sausalito was TOUGH. although i’d check with the company directly because the info on viator was inaccurate.

Golden Gate Park Segway Tour - Easy to learn then 2.5 hours of gliding fun
Totally fun day in the park. The Segways were fun to ride, and pretty easy to learn. (I'm a klutz, and managed nicely.) Instructions were easy to follow. Radios were a bit hard to hear at points, but I usually brought up the rear so might just have been my place in line. Only suggestion? It will be chilly in the shade, wear more clothes than you think you will need!

Amazing excursion on our own to Sausalito. Highly recommended. I recommend to arrive early to unlimited biking. Non organized. Our e bikes were already rented to other customer despite I booked 2 weeks in advance and prepaid. I needed more than one hour to obtain my bikes and thanks to the kind Mexican mechanic who fix a couple os “out of order” for me after the manager just told “other guy came earlier paying full fare in cash”…

Easily one of the most fun experiences we had in San Francisco! Devin was a hilarious and informative guide! We could not have asked for a better teacher. We will definitely go on another tour next time!

3HR Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park GoCar Tour
My recommendation is to get this in EARLY in your trip to SF. There is prob no better way to see more, faster and to get a great overview of the area for things to might way to spend more time on. With just a few short stops, we were a little hard pressed on the 3-hour tour but, I am not sure I want to spend too much more time sitting in them. From the inside, the GoCar is a little noisier than I would like but, that is more of a sitting-inside-it perspective as they aren't really that loud. It would be nice to have a 30sec rewind or a say-that-again button on the digital tour guide... so, play attention when she is talking. You can really cover a lot of ground in these things and the overview of the area is fantastic. I recommend the 3 or 4 hour tour to allow for more flexibility and seeing everything.

When to Get There

San Francisco enjoys mild weather most of the year, so the park is pleasant nearly every day (just be sure to wear layers). Music lovers may want to visit for the annual Outside Lands Music Festival in August or the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in October. Beware the city’s famous fog, affectionately known as Karl, which rolls in from the ocean in July and August, giving San Francisco its chilly summers.

The Golden Gate Park Bison Paddock

The most unusual thing about this city park is its bison paddock, home to a herd of American bison since the 1890s. Stumbling upon the animals is a delightful surprise for many visitors who make it to the western section of the park. To find the meadow, head along John F. Kennedy Drive just west of Spreckels Lake. Hopefully you’ll catch them near the fence, but know that they’re not always in view.
