The Basics

You don’t need to go on safari to encounter Kenya’s wildlife; the Giraffe Centre is an inspiring example of conservation within city limits. Since the center is close to top Nairobi attractions—including the Karen Blixen Museum, Bomas of Kenya, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and Kazuri Beads Factory—many guided tours combine two or more stops to cut down on transit time.

Great experience
Seeing the giraffes and elephants was a great experience. Seeing how well they are cared for and being able to interact with them gave you a whole new appreciation for these incredible animals. Our driver, Stephen, was very helpful and kind as he drove us between the different places. I would recommend this excursion if you have some time to kill in Nairobi.

Day Tour: Giraffe Center, Elephant Orphanage and Nairobi National Park
Feeding the giraffes while giving them a little pet on the nose. Then watching the orphan elephants enjoying recess. Occasionally the little one would come over for some respite from the rough and tumble. Then at the National Park we finally got a close look at two(!) White Rhinos.

Early morning Nairobi national park Elephant orphanage and Giraffe center tour
Simba was a very friendly and dedicated guide and driver. He really went above expectations and took care of everything. He made extra effort helping to find and view and photograph the animals in Nairobi Game Park.

Private Tour Giraffe Center, Elephant Orphanage, Bomas & Dinner Carnivore
Our tour guide Kevin was excellent! He picked us up on time, explained each step of the journey and was very knowledgeable about the different Kenyan cultures. He took us to a very nice place to eat lunch and gave us our personal space. He was not overbearing. Very humble and polite. God willing, we would love for him to be our tour guide again should we make another visit to Kenya. Highly recommended!

Best Day Tour Giraffe Center Elephant Orphanage Kazuri Beads & Bomas of Kenya
I went on this tour on my birthday and it was absolutely fabulous!! I got to feed a giraffe, pet a baby elephant, shop for souvenirs, visit the Kazuri bead factory, and watch traditional dance performance. Meshack and Eric were very kind and patient guides and I would happily recommend them.

Nairobi National Park Elephant Orphanage Giraffe Center and Souvenir Shopping
We had a great trip, Alex was a good driver and didn't let a short breakdown affect anything. Saw Lions with Giraffe kill almost immediately at NNP, massive buffalo herd with babies, rhino etc, Quick pit-stop at Java was most welcome. David Sheldrick was great despite driving rain, Giraffe Centre a little overcrowded, Lunch venue very nice and great for kids with playground & enjoyed the short but interesting tour at Karen Blixen museum. Amazing day!

David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Center Full-Day Tour from Nairobi
We had a fabulous time on this day tour! The elephant orphanage was our favorite. You get to touch them and get lots of great pictures because they are so close to you. They tell you about all of them and how they came to the orphanage and you get the chance to adopt one! The Giraffe center was very cool as well. unfortunately it was under construction so where you usually get to stand to feed them was closed and there was just a very small space to feed. This means you have to be patient to get pictures and to interact with them due to spacing but again very cool! You are not allowed to "kiss" them due to covid but you still get to feed them.

Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Centre in Nairobi
Great your, driver was very nice and helpful in any way he could be. Will say though that this tour is definitely much more touristy than others, and they do take you to a couple "tourist trap" type destinations for lunch and coffee break. But that's sorta to be expected since the orphanage and giraffe center are kinda must dos!! Just be ready for that 😉 And make sure you do more local-type stuff on your own!

What’s It Like to Feed a Giraffe?

Rothschild’s giraffes have long, black tongues, and feeding them can be a somewhat slimy experience. If you’d like to participate, staff will provide you with pellets when you arrive at the Giraffe Centre. While the giraffes aren’t dangerous, it’s worth exercising caution while feeding them, as they’ve been known to dole out the occasional head butt.
