Hector Pieterson Square, Johannesburg

The Basics

While it’s possible to visit many of Soweto’s attractions independently, it’s well worth going with a guide to learn more about the history and modern day culture of one of Africa’s largest black urban settlements. Most half-day tours include stops at Nelson Mandela’s former home, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, and lively Vilakazi Street, known for its public art.

Alternatively, combine a tour of Soweto with a visit to the Apartheid Museum and other Johannesburg sights for a full day of exploration. For something completely different, get a bird’s-eye view of the sprawling township from a helicopter.

Nothing better for a tour of JoBurg and Soweto!

Johannesburg and Soweto Full Day Tour (8 -9 hours Tour)
Thabang was great! This was a super great tour around JoBurg and Soweto. Even during times of Covid we got to have a safe, spectacular tour. While JoBurg is not the most exciting area in SA it is a great place to get some education and perspective and this tour provides that as well! Thabang was super knowledgeable, funny, and made the tour that much better! If you are traveling to or passing through JoBurg book this tour, you will not be disappointed!!!

Soweto Halfday Tour
Norman picked me up early. He began by introducing himself and as he drove off -- he gave me a brief history of Soweto and the surrounding area. He brought me to the nit and grit of Soweto. The Mandela House was a must! Overall, the experience was life-changing!

Soweto and Johannesburg Guided Day Tour
Solly knows his stuff! Informative tour with every detail brought to life and every question thoroughly answered and discussed. With so much history to cover, Solly does a good job of weaving the different histories of Johannesburg, Soweto, Nelson Mandela, and the apartheid era together into a cohesive, easy to understand chronology. I'm deeply grateful for the experience he provided me.

Soweto half-day tour
It was a great experience! My guide lives in Soweto and was very knowledgeable about this area and its rich history. She is an excellent story teller! It felt like I was there at the moment whenever she would talk about the past struggles in this town. Highly recommend this experience. Worth every cent.

Eric was our tour guide for the visits to Soweto &Johannesburg. He was on time and was very knowledgeable and informative. He took the time to show us the original Nelson Mandela house and he even took us to our favorite place the Hard Rock Cafe. This excursion was well worth the money.

Johannesburg, Soweto and Apartheid Museum Guided Day Tour
A really good introduction to Johannesburg and its beginnings following the discovery of gold, followed by Soweto and how it came to prominence during apartheid. The Nelson Mandela house is fascinating, (a bit touristy, though - you're besieged by hawkers as soon as the vehicle comes to a stop!). The Apartheid Museum is a must-see. Did those whites actually believe they were doing right?

We were collected on time by a very friendly guide and driver, who took us on a whistle stop tour of some of the highlights of Johannesburg ... last home of Nelson Mandela and Soweto, including the museum there. Really fascinating.

Soweto and Apartheid Museum Day Tour
Very memorable experience. I enjoyed the design of the Apartheid Museum, highly educational and inspiring. I also got the chance to visit Soweto township, meet and communicate with local people and kids, and have a street food which is remarkably tasty. All the tour guides are knowledgeable and dedicated. This tour is for culture lovers who seek interactions with the local community.

How to Get There

The sheer size of Soweto—with some two million residents—can be bewildering for first-time visitors, so it’s a good idea to travel as part of a guided tour. Alternatively, the Rea Vaya bus route runs from Johannesburg City Centre past many of the township’s notable sights.

History of Soweto

Soweto was founded in 1904 as a forced habitation settlement to which black residents were relocated against their will during an outbreak of the bubonic plague. In the 1970s and ’80s, the district was frequently in the news, especially during the Soweto Uprising of 1976. This series of protests led by black schoolchildren produced one of the world’s most iconic news images—child Hector Pieterson, shot by police and dying in another protester’s arms.
