Soweto

Hector Pieterson Square, Johannesburg

The Basics

While it’s possible to visit many of Soweto’s attractions independently, it’s well worth going with a guide to learn more about the history and modern day culture of one of Africa’s largest black urban settlements. Most half-day tours include stops at Nelson Mandela’s former home, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, and lively Vilakazi Street, known for its public art.

Alternatively, combine a tour of Soweto with a visit to the Apartheid Museum and other Johannesburg sights for a full day of exploration. For something completely different, get a bird’s-eye view of the sprawling township from a helicopter.

Soweto Half Day Tour
This was the most memorable tour I have ever experienced. Our tour guide was amazing. He was very knowledgeable and able to answer any and all questions we had. He was also willing to show us several local areas for us to take pictures and get a better picture of life in Soweto and Johannesburg.

Soweto - an authentic, true & bespoke day with locals
My wife and I took this tour and can't recommend it enough. We saw Soweto in a way you never could in a large tour group and our guides were folks who lived in the neighborhoods they were talking about. Gilda and Gabrielle were both incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and really catered the day to our interests. Start to finish every moment of the day was memorable and anyone with any sort of interest in this incredible city would be doing themselves a disservice to book with anyone else.

Soweto Walking Tour with Lunch
Our group of 3 from the US were greeted by the very courteous and professional Lebo (Rambo). He provided a wonderful tour experience and showed us lots of sights along the way as he recounted interesting historical moments and information. We enjoyed getting to know him as we spent the morning together touring Soweto. We highly recommend this tour with Rambo as the guide. 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Soweto Halfday Tour
Norman picked me up early. He began by introducing himself and as he drove off -- he gave me a brief history of Soweto and the surrounding area. He brought me to the nit and grit of Soweto. The Mandela House was a must! Overall, the experience was life-changing!

Soweto and Johannesburg Guided Day Tour
We were fortunate to have Solly, the owner of the company, take us around. He was extremely knowledgeable and each tour we went on was good. Due to the current situation, a few places were still not yet open. It was still worth it and I recommend that everyone do this tour with Solly.

Soweto and Johannesburg Guided Day Tour
Fantastic tour of Constitutional Hill and Nelson Mandela''s House in Soweto. Unfortunately the Apartheid Museum is closed at present so we could not do that. Solly is passionate and very knowledgeable about the areas.

How to Get There

The sheer size of Soweto—with some two million residents—can be bewildering for first-time visitors, so it’s a good idea to travel as part of a guided tour. Alternatively, the Rea Vaya bus route runs from Johannesburg City Centre past many of the township’s notable sights.

History of Soweto

Soweto was founded in 1904 as a forced habitation settlement to which black residents were relocated against their will during an outbreak of the bubonic plague. In the 1970s and ’80s, the district was frequently in the news, especially during the Soweto Uprising of 1976. This series of protests led by black schoolchildren produced one of the world’s most iconic news images—child Hector Pieterson, shot by police and dying in another protester’s arms.
