The Basics

Johannesburg city tours and Soweto tours typically feature a stop at the Apartheid Museum, with some including an in-depth tour. The museum tells the story of 20th-century apartheid through photos, documents, and film footage, as well as interactive features that bring the history of racial classification to life. The end of South African segregation in 1990 (following former president Nelson Mandela’s release from prison) is celebrated by the seven pillars of the country’s post-apartheid constitution in the courtyard: democracy, equality, reconciliation, diversity, responsibility, respect, and freedom.

Johannesburg Full-Day Tour(Soweto/Jo-Burg & Apartheid Museum)
Our tour guide knew his stuff. He made it very interesting and influential. We were not able to get into the Apartheid Museum due to Covid (and for which we have not seen an afjustment). We did add a couple of areas on a drive by. The museum's and Constituion Hall were impressive. We were 5 adults in a smallish car so check your transportation if that is an issue. All in all a good day

Half Guided Day Tour of Soweto from Apartheid Museum
Solly was amazing...although the Apartheid Museum was closed he still filled the time with plenty of info and other sites to see around Johannesburg. All the info provided helped myself and the other group members learn about the history of not only Johannesburg but also the country of South Africa as well. Visiting Soweto and being educated on its past was great as well. I highly recommend the tour to anyone wanting an informative look at the city.

Half Guided Day Tour of Soweto from Apartheid Museum
I made three tours with Solly. 1. half day tour to Soweto and Apartheid Museum 2. Tour in Pretoria 3. Cradle of the Humankind and Sterkfountein Cave I recommend Solly as your tour guide. He tries to explain you the things a good as possible and also cares that you are safe. He is also punctual and looks professional. So, if you want to have a reliable partner to guide you in to these places, I recommend him.

Johannesburg Full-Day Tour(Soweto/Jo-Burg & Apartheid Museum)
Really interesting tour. The guide Pastor was very knowledgeable and friendly, Apartheid museum was fascinating as was the chance to see what life is like in one of the Johannesburg townships although it does also make you feel sad to see some of the poverty these people endure

A good introduction to Johannesburg & area

Johannesburg, Soweto and Apartheid Museum Guided Day Tour
A really good introduction to Johannesburg and its beginnings following the discovery of gold, followed by Soweto and how it came to prominence during apartheid. The Nelson Mandela house is fascinating, (a bit touristy, though - you're besieged by hawkers as soon as the vehicle comes to a stop!). The Apartheid Museum is a must-see. Did those whites actually believe they were doing right?

Soweto and Apartheid Museum Day Tour
I thoroughly enjoyed my half day tour with Jacob. While I was on my own for the museum visits, we struck up fascinating conversation between the sites and he was able to share not only different aspects of Soweto but also a sense of day to day life, without intruding on people's lives. Highly recommend him!

Soweto & Apartheid Museum Guided Tour
Our tour guide, Pasta, is amazing! I booked this trip with just one review & so glad that I did. My son & I learned so much about S. Africa & Soweto, we experienced much more than my previous visit to Soweto. The Apartheid museum is always a treat to learn more detail about the real struggle for a true democracy in S. Africa. Book this tour - you will no be disappointed! Thank you, Pasta, for treating us like old friends & making our day with you so amazing! I wish you much, much success in the future. You deserve it!

Johannesburg, Soweto and Apartheid Museum Guided Day Tour
Nick was a great guide, who constantly was a fount of local knowledge and much experience. First off a drive through of dangerous Downtown Jo'burg, which was great as you always felt safe. Then to the 2010 World Cup Stadium, for a look outside. This was followed by an extensive visit to the Apartheid Museum, which was stunning, with Nick giving us plenty of time to see. Then onto a lunch in Soweto of a local buffet, with looks at Desmond Tutu's house and Nelson Mandela's house. Nick was such a good guide and very attentive to his clients. Great tour!

Awesome Personalized Half Day Private Tour

Soweto and Apartheid Museum Day Tour
The two of us joined Jacob for this private half day tour during our Honeymoon, and it was absolutely perfect. We asked for an extra hour of sleep (granted, though you don't want to wait til it's too too hot) and Jacob picked us up in a new air conditioned Volvo and we started our tour. As Americans, we knew very little about Apartheid, and after this morning of conversation and historical immersion, we feel so much more informed. It's a super heavy topic, but Jacob is an intelligent and thoughtful guide who will introduce you to locals along the way to share different perspectives. Because it was a private tour, we were able to spend more time in the museum on our own and bagged lunch altogether. As for content, we learned a ton about Apartheid, Nelson Mandela, and general African and South African history, so you don't need a background in international affairs to find this tasteful museum and experience very special. Bring a little bit of cash so you can tip folks like the student tour guide at Nelson Mandela house, etc. I would recommend this tour, and Jacob as a guide, without hesitation. He made our experience in SA incredibly special. Thanks again!
